Watering is recommended as soon as the first signs of drought appear or once a week for 1-2 hours per zone. Be sure to give your lawn a good soaking rather than a little bit several times per week. It is best to water early in the day, before the sun is too intense to avoid evaporation. If you can, avoid watering in the evening. This leaves the grass wet overnight, providing a potential breeding ground for fungi, insects and diseases. Once a week encourages good root growth and a healthier looking lawn.
Power Raking gets your lawn ready for the upcoming season by removing the dead thatch that's left from winter kill. It also allows water and fertilizer to easily get to the soil, giving your lawn a jump start on the new year. Once power racking has been completed the use of a hand rake, mower or lawn vacuum to remove the excess thatch from your lawn is required. We recommend having this done potentially each year.
Aerating, which should be done when the soil is moist, helps to alleviate hard, compact soils by pulling out two to three inch long plugs from the soil. Aeration also helps water, air and fertilizer get to the roots and helps to break up some excess thatch. Spring or fall is a suitable time to aerate your lawn. We recommend having this done each year.
Grass should be kept at a level of 2 1/2 to 3 inches. One-third of the height should be taken off during each cut. When the grass is longer, bagging may be necessary to avoid an accumulation of clippings. Avoid cutting grass with dull mower blades. When the blades are dull, they shred the grass rather than cutting it. The shredded ends will then dry out giving the lawn a brownish tinge. If you grass is thick and lush, bagging should be done each time you mow.
After several years, mature plants begin to slow down their reproduction rate. Since a blade of grass lives only an average of 45 to 60 days, production of new tillers must continually outpace the dieback of older leaves. Young grass will produce tillers faster than older grass. Therefore, one of the most important secrets to maintaining a healthy, thick lawn is to make sure your grass is young. (Nick Christians, PhD, Iowa State University) The practice of overseeding lawns is the easiest way of keeping grass young.
Fertilizers provide nutrients necessary for plant health and growth, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen is needed for healthy green growth and regulation of other nutrients. Phosphorus helps proper roots and seeds develop and resist disease. Potassium is also important in root development and disease resistance. For the healthiest lawn, it is recommended that fertilizing be done 3 times a year because a healthy lawn will help deter weeds. Using a quick release fertilizer gives an immediate result, but not a long lasting effect. Additionally, it needs to be watered in after being applied or burning of the grass will occur. Using the quick release fertilizer will require more applications.
For longer lasting results, Enviro Masters uses a slow release fertilizer that will not burn and does not need immediate watering after application although watering is recommended within 3 to 5 days. Our fertilizers are specially blended by our supplier for our use so you know you are getting a superior product.
